Periods 5/6:
On your blog, work together to create an effective introduction with thesis for each of the following prompts; post to your blog during the period today.  This is not a divide and conquer activity.  Work on one prompt together; complete the intro for it; then move on the next prompt. Underline the thesis in each introduction.identify the type of thesis (closed, open, counterargument).

Prompt #1 Choose a controversial, local,  national, or global issue with which you are familiar and use appropriate evidence in an essay that carefully considers the opposing positions on this controversy and proposes a solution or compromise.

Prompt #2  In his 2004 book, Status Anxiety, Alain de Botton argues that the chief aim of humorists is not merely to entertain but "to convey with impunity messages that might be dangerous or impossible to state directly."  Think about the implications of de Botton's view of the role of humorists (cartoonists, stand-up comics, satirical writers, hosts of television programs, etc. ) Then write an essay that defends, challenges, or qualifies de Botton's claim.

Today: Fallacious Ad Activity Blog Post (Title of Blog Post=The Name of Your Invented Product)

You are an advertising team for a large company; your team has decided to prey on the weak-minded consumer by creating an advertisement that contains myriad fallacies.  Your hope is that the consumer will be fooled by your fallacies and rush out to buy your product.

Before you start on the ad:

Invent your product.  It can be anything; be creative, but don’t spend too much time on this step.  Create, take, or find a photo/image of your invented product; post to your blog.  Create a 1-5 word slogan; post to blog as well.

The written advertisement:

Write an advertisement in paragraph form that contains at least 10 fallacies.  Think of this as a radio ad—something someone might read expressively on the air to sell your product.  After you write a sentence containing a fallacy, place the name of the fallacy in parentheses.

Your written advertisement should flow (flow?  ;-)  nicely and should not simply  sound like a list of fallacies (use transitions).

Record the ad using your voice recording app and post to your blog entry. (Possible concern: You may need to record the full ad in segments to allow proper size of files--not sure).

Here are directions you will perhaps be needing for the final piece of this activity:

How to Put an Audio Clip on Blogger

by Brandy Alexander, Demand Media
You have the option to enhance your Blogger site with all kinds of content, including audio clips. With audio, your visitor can hear the sounds that help support the content of your page. If you're a musician, for instance, you can publish your latest song. Blogger gives you access to the "HTML/JavaScript" gadget, which makes it convenient to add the code that publishes your media. After you upload your file to a free Internet host, use the "Layout" page on Blogger to put the audio clip where you want it.

Uploading the Audio Clip

Step 1
Point your browser to a free online file host such as File Dropper, WikiUpload or zShare (links in Resources).
Step 2
Click the "Choose File" or "Browse" button, and select your audio file from the dialog window that opens. Click the "Upload Now," "Start Upload" or "Upload Images" button to perform the upload.
Step 3
Copy the code that appears in the Link or URL text field.

Publishing to Blogger

Step 1
Log in to your Blogger account, and click the name of your blog to access your site's "Overview" page. Click the "Layout" link to bring up the page where you can insert gadgets.
Step 2
Click the "Add a Gadget" link in the area where you want the audio file to display. This action opens the "Add a Gadget" dialog window.
Step 3
Click the "HTML/JavaScript" link and paste the audio file link in the Content box. You can also enter an optional heading in the Title field. Click the "Save" button to publish your work, and then click the "View Blog" button to see the audio clip on your page.

Happy Holidays! Hope you all have a safe, fun, restful,

interesting break! See you next year!
