Periods 5,6 Thursday, September 17, 2015

Good Afternoon!

Today you should have a short writing piece to turn in. Thank you!

During class we will read four related pieces and then break into groups of 3 or 4 per group to do some rhetorical analysis. Here is the list of four pieces we'll read and analyze today:
     p. 29       "Princess Diana Dies in Paris Crash"  BBC August 31, 1997
     p. 29-30 Queen Elizabeth's Televised Speech   September 5, 1997
     p. 30-31 Earl Spencer's Eulogy for Diana   September 6, 1997
     p. 32-34 Wikipedia entry for Princess Diana (accessed September 15, 2006)

After reading the 4 pieces as a large group, break in to working groups of 3 or 4 and complete the following (be ready to share out if time allows):

Discuss in your groups (and record these thoughts) on:
1) The purpose of each text,
2) How the interaction of speaker, audience, and subject affects the text (for each piece),
3) How effective each piece is in achieving its purpose.
Record group thoughts/responses/answers/analysis on the paper provided (4 quadrants: record your notes in one quadrant for each piece).
